Guided Inquiry Example:
Fear of Crime in Hamilton-Wentworth

The following is the combination of three types of material:

  1. notes that only the instructor has
  2. overheads and handout task sheets, and
  3. overheads for feedback (where the instructor records ideas from the groups and provides additional information)

The situation description is a handout provided to each student. Once students have read this (and are divided into groups of 3-6) each group can be given task 1.

Under each task the material provided here is in the following order:

  1. Task Description (used as an overhead or handout to groups)
  2. Note to instructor on feedback.
  3. Overheads used to gather feedback from groups or to report additional information before proceeding to the next task.

Go First to Situation Description Which Should be Distributed to Students. (A simulation of a real world situation)

Then Do the Following...

  1. Task #1 Exploring the Situation
  2. Task #2: Initial Exploration of Chosen Area of Focus
  3. Task #3: The Central Question
  4. Task #4: Possible Answers
  5. Task #5: Researching Possible Answers
  6. Task #6: Another Possible Answer
  7. Task #7: Summary and Conclusions
