The Institute of Canadian Bankers (ICB) plays an important role in supporting the network of Canadian banks in our efforts to educate and train their employees. In responding to the expressed needs of the banks, the ICB has a strong commitment to distance education in the delivery of its courses. We already offer paper-based, Distance Education versions of our programs, but are now quickly moving toward the development of technology-based versions. In fulfilling this commitment, we are interested in better understanding the strategies required to increase the effectiveness of this mode of delivery, especially those which support collaborative learning. In addition, we are very interested in examining the application of new and emerging technologies to education and skills development in the workplace.
As the ICB begins to focus on the impact of technology-based learning in the banking environment, as well on the dissemination of our own courses, we are particularly interested in assessment and evaluation issues (as our programs include a formal, certification process). It is important to note that the ICB is in a position to coordinate research efforts across the Canadian banking network and solicit in-kind support from interested banks who are in various stages of implementing technology-based learning. The partnership with EvNet represents our teams' effort to implement and test the use of communication systems in a business environment related to education (as opposed to training or performance support).
