Guideline # 5: Inquiry ISS3 SUMMARY and PRESENTATION of RESEARCH PAPER

PRINCIPLE: The purpose of the summary and presentation of your research paper is

1. to share your research findings with all members of the class and develop new questions;
2. to test your ideas and gather suggestions for improvement to refine and revise your paper for final submission; and
3. to develop oral presentation skills.

There are two components to this assignment:

1. The written summary (300 words) of your paper is to be circulated to all members of the class (by LearnLink or other means) one week before class presentation. The summary could include the following:

• Statement of your major research question
• Statement of the underlying assumptions of your paper
• Description of the evidence you used
• Statement of where your understanding has progressed or what your conclusions are
• Statement of how your paper furthers the understanding of the theme of the course
• What new research questions arise from your paper?

2. Class Presentation: Because we have limited class time, each presentor will have about 15 minutes. Since all members of the class will have an opportunity to read the written summary, you may wish to focus the discussion on the most important issues and questions. WHEN: to be scheduled in last four weeks of class: March 15, March 22nd, March 29th, or April 5th.

LENGTH: summary no more than 300 words; presentation no more than fifteen minutes

WEIGHTING: 10% of final grade
